In this haunting prequel to Guilty Deceptions, fifteen year old me had been drawn to one of Saint John’s most shocking and horrendous crimes. I had assisted the local sheriff in investigating this tragedy that had been so devastating to me and the community that it had left scars much deeper than anyone could imagine.


To speak plainly, I had been determined to prove to myself and my father, that I was willing to join the constabulary. Having to navigate my way around my fathers disapproval I had to confront brutal realities of this case. Still, amid the chaos of this unforgettable crime, I had unknowingly crossed paths with individuals whose fates will be tied to my own in seven short years.


Truth be told, as the investigation had darkened and danger had crept closer, I had faced an impossible decision, could I convince both my father and myself that I was truly meant for this crime? Or would this investigation alter the course of my life forever.


This tale is for readers who love Victorian mysteries, historical crimes, and suspense that is buried in secrets, deception, and shadows that linger.

Behind the Scenes: The Long Journey of Guilty Deceptions

  I first had the idea for Guilty Deceptions way back around 2012 or 2013 when I had read about an old case from the 1800s, that piqued my interest. In the beginning, I had aimed for a tell all book about the case from point A to point B. straight forward, with no fiction at all. I found that version rather boring and dull. Something was also eating at me, it was a simple question in my mind: How back then, did they know for sure they even got this case right? With that idea in mind, I had started crafting early versions of Guilty deceptions, which had at one time been called: The Murder in Willow Grove, and Beneath the Shrubs. Either of those titles worked for me, and I also realized I needed a protagonist that would be remembered and well liked, with a few flaws.  That's when I came up with the concept of Sheriff Dawson, who is completely fictional unlike other characters in the novel who were based on actual people who had been involved in the case.
